The city's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that was a central issue in his election bid.

A Historic Residence

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the mayoral home for nearly all New York City mayors after the World War II era.

However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key platform, hesitated to declare this decision right away after his triumph in November.

"The choice rested on keeping my family safe and the need to focusing all of my focus on carrying out the affordability agenda the city's residents voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.

A Fond Farewell

He resided in the Astoria neighbourhood, a district famous for its vibrant immigrant populations and culinary diversity.

"To Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, the community will continue to reside a part of me and my work," he added.

Political Debate

In his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his personal living arrangements.

But his rivals, including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for occupying the affordable housing even though he is from a famous family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his three terms, which concluded in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a place for official events, and pushed for an extensive renovation of the older mansion.

A Grand New Home

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his swearing-in on 1 January, he will find himself in a setting a stark contrast to his modest Astoria digs.

Featuring cream-colored walls, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home overlooking the East River.

Within, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is decorated to reflect the home's historical period.

The compound, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also has increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

Some residents have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, which means the city sets limits on how much landlords can increase rent each year.

City residents see such units as crucial resources as the price of rent outpaces the average income.

Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from the property website Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
