The Golden State is Entirely Drought-Free for the First Time in a Quarter Century.
Following 25 long years, no portion of the state is facing dryness. This landmark event arrives after challenging years marked by a lack of precipitation that exacerbated fire dangers and challenged its huge agribusiness.
A Chart Shows Zero Dryness
A recent update from the federal monitoring program showed that California in its entirety is without drought or abnormal dryness. This shift resulted from weeks of heavy precipitation that helped fill water storage sites like Shasta and Oroville exceeding their long-term norms.
âIf youâre 25 or younger youâve only known in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,â noted a local meteorologist.
After Severe Systems to Rainy Seasons
The journey here involved powerful and fatal winter storms that struck the state in recent years, resulting in widespread flooding, power outages, and tragic losses. Although that weather started to mitigate the drought, they weren't enough to erase it completely.
Until late December, pockets like northeastern California were still classified as experiencing dryness. Heavy rains at the beginning of January finally erased those remaining dry spots.
Essential Mountain Snowfall Presents a Challenge
But, authorities caution that being out of drought should not be confused with being out of the woods. Current readings of the Sierra Nevada snowpack show it at approximately 70 percent of the average for this date.
This mountain snow, which supplies a significant portion of the state's usable water as it thaws later in the year, is a critical factor for long-term water security. Water officials stress that it is not yet time to draw conclusions for the annual water supply.
âThe current pattern right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,â explained a California water official. âWeâd like to see the snow accumulation to pick up by the start of April so that weâre closer to average.â
Even as the official status indicates no dryness, attention turns to sustaining this hard-won hydrological health throughout the coming seasons.
