The Generosity of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Gentleman I Barely Knew Supported Me Obtain the Job That Altered My Path

During the late 1980s, I was beginning a low-cost journey to Europe with a travel partner. Since my travel mate was considering starting a postgraduate program in New York, we had planned a 14-day stopover there before heading to London.

We got to the postgrad residence, a big ten-floor structure on the UWS called International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the dining hall, where we picked up meals, found a table, and engaged in conversation with fellow residents.

Adjacent to my seat was an Iraqi man enrolled in an engineering program at an Ivy League institution. He asked me what I my profession was, and I told him that I had recently completed my studies with a science degree and had been working on studies using an electron microscope.

He mentioned that there was an research lab at the institution – adjacent to the engineering department, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I ought to seek a job with them. I laughed it off, saying that I was soon departing to Europe and, even more importantly, I didn’t have a US visa.

The next day I went out exploring, returning to the canteen that night. The man from Iraq approached me and told me that he had set up a meeting for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Given that he had taken the effort, I went to the meeting – but immediately explained to my prospective employer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where anything feels possible – she declared: “We can make that happen. When can you start?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I held that position for three years. An advantage of the role was that I got free tuition at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to complete a graduate degree in global studies.

I lost touch with him and I can't recall his name, but his selfless gesture transformed my future in numerous aspects. I didn't possess the courage or self-belief to approach someone at an elite institution and request employment. And, I had consistently hoped to take classes in another country, but could never have afforded it without that educational benefit.

Perhaps most importantly, that role at the university resulted in a role in Europe where I encountered my wonderful partner, with whom I now have four wonderful sons and daughters. That encounter altered everything. That benevolent individual changed my trajectory in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
