Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the hospital, where his condition is described as critical but stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that reassures me, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”

Authorities issued security footage earlier this week of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. What prompted the attack is currently under review and authorities said it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries were reported.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning near MSG and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a baby.

“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, I’ll keep private, but It is reassuring that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd did not participate during the current season, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.

He signed with New York as a free agent in March and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on early August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in 2019. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
