Israelis mark second anniversary of 7 October incident as Gaza ceasefire negotiations continue
Citizens have assembled around the country to mark two years since the Hamas-conducted assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions advanced in Egypt over a conclusion to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
The assault led to over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others taken back to Gaza as hostages. It was the most deadliest day for the Jewish community since the World War II.
Israel reacted by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are seen as reliable by the United Nations and other international bodies.
"Our aggressive opponents have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the release of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will never again present a danger to Israel".
Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel
The national leadership rescheduled formal memorials until October 16th - after the completion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still were held across the country on Tuesday.
A commemorative event for the relatives of people who died in the Hamas assault was conducted in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the families themselves, it was televised on Israeli TV networks.
A period earlier, a silent tribute was held around the country.
Negotiation Talks in Egypt
Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams met in the North African tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to review the conditions of the agreement.
A senior delegate involved in the negotiations indicated that an evening round of negotiations commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.
The representative said the day's discussions finished without tangible results, due to conflicting views over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not recommence fighting after the opening period of the deal.
He noted that the discussions are "tough and have still not achieve any significant progress," but noted that facilitators are striving to reduce the disparities between the conflicting groups.
Critical Matters in Discussions
- A lasting truce
- The trade of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
- Measures for assistance deliveries
- Future administration of the region
Civilian Feeling
In the city's public square previously, young Hagar - whose family member survived the incident on the gathering, where hundreds were lost their lives and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - shared: "No place seems like home anymore and until all the hostages are released not a single person will have peace of mind."
"Once we see everyone home returned, we can breathe again. Then we can start to recover," she concluded.
In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in the capital, people congregated to demonstrate their support for the relatives of the captives. Israel states 48 stay in confinement in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be alive.
Activist Atalia Regev stated: "We need do any agreement required for the abducted to come back home. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be protected."
Surveys now consistently show that about seventy percent of Israelis desire the war to end in as payment for the release of the abducted.
Palestinian Circumstances
At the site of the music event, those paying respects gathered to honor the dead.
From the site, the sound of military attacks and explosions could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people said the heavy Israeli bombardment persisted.
In Gaza City, bombardments were documented in the dawn of Tuesday in the western Tal al-Hawa, sector and zone areas and in the eastern district of that sector, as well the settlement to the northwestern area.
"Once the night comes, the anxiety arrives with it," displaced urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli air strike previously, shared.
"Me and my three children are fearful of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are resting together, clinging, especially my little child who puts his head on me the entire evening."
"Every second we check the updates to see developments. And I'm worried that this halt will not be completed and that the fighting will return to us."
Medical Situation
The healthcare center in Gaza City announced it had accepted the corpses of six people by the midday, including a trio who died in an Israeli strike in the south part district.
A different healthcare center in the south region of the city indicated additional victims had been brought there. A person was killed by Israeli troops while seeking assistance to the south, medical staff reported.
