Both Deceased Students Named in the Providence Campus Attack as Authorities Press On With Manhunt for Perpetrator.

Two students who were killed in the weekend's violent attack in Providence had tributes paid to them on Monday – as a manhunt for their killer carried on following the release by Rhode Island officials of the sole person detained in connection in the case.

Honoring a Lost Student

The student Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was described as “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, per the Birmingham's Cathedral Church of the Advent, which offered condolences for her at a gathering on Sunday.

Her role included the vice-presidency of Brown’s division of the College Republicans organization, according to the organization. The White House press secretary also expressed condolences on social media, remarking: “Words cannot express. Remembering her family and friends, particularly her mother and father.”

The Second Victim

The other deceased individual was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, a citizen of Uzbekistan in his freshman year at the renowned school, according to relatives.

His name was officially acknowledged by the foreign office of Uzbekistan.

“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. He had big dreams of pursuing a career in neurosurgery and assisting patients,” Samira Umurzokova, his sister said in a online post.

The Shooting Incident

An additional nine individuals were hurt in the violent event in the engineering building of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the university's examination week.

Officials stated by the end of Sunday that a man aged 24 taken into custody in a police operation at a lodging about around 27 kilometers from the university earlier in the day was set to be freed.

“There is a killer at large,” declared the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.

He added, “Occasionally a probe goes down a path, and then you need to change course and pursue a different angle, and that is the current situation over the last 24 hours or so.”

Ongoing Concerns

The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “We know that this is likely to cause new worry for our city”.

The assailant opened fire inside a room in the building on Saturday afternoon, shooting over four dozen bullets from a 9mm pistol, a law enforcement official told the media outlet.

Police that raided the hotel found two firearms and two ammunition clips when the person of interest was taken into custody, according to reports.

Those Hurt

Among those wounded, one pupil was allowed to go home, mentioned Christina Paxson, Christina Paxson. Seven others were in critical but stable condition, and one remained in critical care, police said on Sunday.

A private school, a private K-12 school in North Carolina, said a former student, Kendall Turner, was among those critically wounded.

Cook was honored at a religious service in Birmingham on Sunday. A clergyman said, “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light not only here growing up... but at the university she was a radiant presence in that institution as well.”

Martin Bertao, Martin Bertao, posted a statement from the organization. “Ella was recognized for her fearless, heroic, and gentle spirit as she aided her club and peers,” he said.

The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “profoundly grieved” by the student's death in a statement. “We offer our heartfelt sympathies to Mr Umurzokov’s family, loved ones, and schoolmates and mourn the loss of his bright future.”

The fatal shooting at Brown, the country's seventh most historic college with about 7,300 undergraduate and three thousand graduate students, occurred during one of at least 392 shooting incidents recorded nationally so far in 2025, according to records. Monday was the 349th day of the year.
