Throughout a large portion of the concluding season of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max find themselves trapped within a psychic prison forged from the past of Henry Creel. Their quest for freedom in the pivotal sixth episode forces them to relive a defining event from Henry's early years—an event that may just hold the secret to his downfall permanently.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Cavern

After locating Max in the world dubbed Camazotz, Holly discovers she is hiding out in a grotto that Henry is terrified of. By leaving the lens cap on a spyglass taken from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the source of fear lies outside of the cave. Matching her view with the shape, she and Max tumble into a abandoned tunnel.

There, they witness a child version of Henry find an wounded, fearful individual. When Henry tries to help, the man reacts violently, striking Henry in the hand. To protect himself, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly questions through tears. The answer is affirmative, but the event involved more than a fight for life.

Like many elements of the final season, the full story behind the mine shaft incident originates in the theatrical production Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

An Interdimensional Incident and Stolen Research

This backstory explains the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which allegedly sent a U.S. Navy ship into a plane known as the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the only one to return was the captain, who came back in a vegetative state with an different blood composition.

That survivor's offspring, Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this experiment in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee stole research materials to sell to the Soviets, who were desperate to launch their own interdimensional projects. This spy in the tunnel was that very thief.

The Briefcase's Contents

Based on what is revealed about the doctor's experiments, the case almost certainly contained vials of the unique blood type. At that moment, Henry is already bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon contact with the blood, causing the development of his psychic abilities—abilities he would inadvertently transfer to the kids under Brenner's care.

A second theory, the container could have held exotic matter that eventually found its way to the Hawkins lab, where it maintains the stability of the parallel world. The prequel shows that young Henry was transported in the Abyss, coming back 12 hours later fundamentally changed. Throughout the play, he battles the whispers of a sinister presence, similar to how the character Will was influenced by the shadow monster in season 2.

The Power of Fear

The reason Henry avoids the cave associated with the mine highlights how utterly horrifying the event was for him. While he controls the army of monsters and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy remains. The villain weaponizes terror, and the show is setting up a climactic battle between him and Will, who has confronted his personal demons to become stronger.

His confrontation has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. Crucially, Will now is aware of what Vecna himself fears, potentially giving him a critical advantage in the series finale ahead.
