What We Know About the Victims of the Bondi Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 people lost their lives and more than 40 were wounded when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have confirmed the death toll remains at 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 injured people were transported to the hospital.

The deceased are yet to be formally identified, but police believe their ages span between 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the victims who have been named at this time.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father of five children, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She described the events before the shooting, stating they were standing when the shooting started. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, the Foreign Minister declared that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, according to reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, many remain receiving treatment, with a number in a critical state. Those hurt include two police officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
