This Swine Life: Pig Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami-Dade Leader.
While perhaps not at the identical stature as granting clemency to holiday birds, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. Clemency is justified for her. No offenses are on her docket,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with obvious nods to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued from the start of the onset of a new presidential term.
“If we disregard eating six or seven apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “May this pig enjoy a prosperous future away from worry.”
The event, which both honors and questions the area's customary feast of eating roast pork during the holidays, was founded to replicate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The swine, contributed by a Coral Gables firefighter, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming “6-7” – inspired by a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The craze became so ubiquitous that a major dictionary recently declared “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A Future Secured
The pardoned swine is now destined to live out its days at a farm sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The pig pardon has become a cherished method to kick off the festive period,” said the cafe owner, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It represents the essence of Miami: vibrant, varied, and grounded in customs that foster togetherness. Every time, we are honored to observe culture and compassion in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Attendees enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they toasted the pig's pardon.
