It has been 30 years after the first Toy Story movie debuted, launching Pixar as a leading film company and bringing audiences to iconic characters like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), who are now famous worldwide.

Coming in 2026, the next chapter is scheduled for release. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 landed this week, offering a brief look into the plot but keeping viewers curious how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.

The Latest Addition: A Frog-Shaped Tablet Spooks the Gang

In the teaser shows Bonnie — who received the toy collection when he left for college — getting a latest plaything, one that terrifies the familiar toy group. She gets her first tablet computer, and she is excited about it.

Theoretically, the frog-shaped tablet will come to life just like Bonnie's other toys. Still, the characters appear to consider it as a danger intending to supplant them, which it probably is.

The Cowboy's Comeback: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4

An element the trailer avoids is why Woody is back with his companions in the child's bedroom. The finale of Toy Story 4 saw him embark on a fresh journey with Bo Peep (the actress), traveling with a carnival and helping prize toys find good homes.

Certainly, the filmmakers will address the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Seeing him show up in the familiar setting without warning is somewhat puzzling, though. It also makes us wonder whether his partner will have come back with him. And what about the stuntman toy (the star)?

Continuity from the Previous Film

At the very least, some aspects are continuing from the prior film. The final act the cowboy did before departing for his fresh path was hand over his symbol of authority to Jessie (Joan Cusack), leaving her in charge of the toy domain. In the teaser shows the insignia attached to her shirt.

Hopefully she is still the driving force among the toys.

Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on the scheduled date.
