Space Traveler Shares Mental Health Struggle Following ‘Tsunami of Backlash After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also included celebrity crewmates.
The high-profile flight was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, describing a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the period after the flight.
She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.
A Path to Recovery
Months following achieving her goal, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the followers whose messages of encouragement helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.
She concluded that amid the criticism, important benefits had resulted from the flight, such as elevated attention for her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.
