Manchester United Set to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from Bayern Munich.
A Major Signing for the WSL Side
The forward, with six months remaining on her contract, has been a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League side.
Departure from Munich was expected since she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the club's fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading strikers. Per reports, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.
Reliable Goal Threat to Boost United's Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a major uplift to United’s forward line. Schüller has been highly consistent with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- For seven consecutive seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Steam at Old Trafford
Securing the German international comes at a time when United seem to be building positive momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has brought additional activity:
- The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a club official stated: “She has become a critical part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the American league, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
