Dallas Cowboys Proprietor Jerry Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Offensive Signal toward Fans

The NFL has levied a hefty $250,000 penalty on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for what he describes as an “inadvertent” offensive hand signal directed at fans during a recent game at MetLife Stadium.

Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones flashing his middle finger toward opposing supporters, though he insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team clinched a decisive win.

“That was unfortunate. It was kind of an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, our fans. The entire stadium was brimming with excitement for the Cowboys.”

He further clarified that the gesture was entirely unintentional, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I just put up the incorrect finger,” he noted. “The action was accidentally done. This is sincere. Should you call it accidental, you can. However, it got resolved rapidly.”

League Context for Proprietor Penalties

This incident isn’t the first time an NFL owner has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Previous cases involve:

  • Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at fans in early 2024.
  • Then Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.

Jones, who is recognized for his publicity flair, possesses an estimated net worth of around $16bn, so the penalty easily payable for the billionaire proprietor.

Offseason Issues and Media Spotlight

This event comes after a contentious offseason for Jones, who encountered significant criticism from the Dallas supporters after the team dealt star defensive player Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

Moreover, Jones was a prominent subject in a streaming series that explored his influence in developing the Cowboys into the world’s highest-worth athletic organization, even with its modern-era title shortcomings.

The NFL’s decision to fine Jones highlights its ongoing effort to maintain proper behavior among all team officials, irrespective of their status or financial standing.
