Adult Swim's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Substantial Renewal for Two More Seasons.
In October of last year, Adult Swim saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the channel introduced a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a animated take of a serene talk show. At a time often marked by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Network Praise
The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming style.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about following this endearing family go about their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its current cynical streak. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
What Comes Next
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well catalyze that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to experience the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
